Why more people are switching to organic shampoo

More and more people are heeding the call toward "sustainable living."

The movement lobbies for consuming goods while preventing the production of unnecessary waste. It can start with one simple act, such as ditching the use of plastic straws or shopping using eco-bags.

Your "go green" journey can even start with just changing your shampoo.

Organic shampoos do not only make your hair healthy, but they also reduce plastic waste in the environment.

PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) breaks down the ways organic hair products do good to you and Mother Earth.

LESS HARMFUL TO ENVIRONMENT

The beauty industry applies the concept of sustainable living into what it calls "sustainable beauty."

Davines Salon PR & Digital Marketing Head Samara Cruz explains this further in an interview with PEP.ph during the Davines Hair on Stage event held on October 21, 2019, at Marquis Events Place in Taguig City.

According to Cruz, "sustainable beauty" is not only about brands producing products that enhance your looks, but ensuring that "what [they] do is also good for the environment."

They create products using less harmful chemicals and more organic ingredients that are mostly harvested in farms.

These ingredients, in turn, do not contaminate the water that goes into the ocean or the earth's soil each time you wash your hair.

Cruz expounds, "'Di ba, shampoos, conditioners are something that we use daily?

"Whatever you put on your hair goes back to the ocean.

"It should be good for [your hair] and good also for the world.

"It's eco-friendly."

MAINTAINS YOUR HAIR'S MOISTURE

Another good reason to start using organic hair products is that they won't dry out your locks.

"Usually, when you use chemicals, it will dry out your hair," she explains.

These chemicals are found in some conditioners that, although they soften your hair, can also strip off your hair's moisture.

Cruz affirms that organic products do otherwise, as the vitamins from their natural, farm-grown ingredients will nourish your hair.

"It will naturally bring out the oil of your scalp.

"It will also maintain moisture.

"Kasi chemicals will take out the moisture in general.

"So using natural products will help keep the moisture," she says.

How do you ensure that your hair is moisturized?

Samara has a quick tip: "When you shampoo, leave it on for three minutes.

"It opens the pores of your hair, then the conditioner will keep the moisture.

"Usually kasi when we shampoo the hair, we shampoo, then that's it.

"And then we put conditioner.

"But you have to shampoo your hair, leave it on for three minutes.

"It's like putting moisturizer on the face, you have to open the pores so the moisture will come in."

GENTLER ON YOUR SCALP

Aside from keeping your hair healthy, organic hair products are gentler on your scalp and make it less prone to allergic reactions.

Davines Creative Director Kezia Sumbillo explains this in a phone interview with PEP.ph on November 6, 2019.

"Since I've been using it [organic shampoo], I've noticed that it's gentler on the scalp.

"A lot of times, I feel with other brands that are chemically based, other people have the tendency to develop an allergy to it.

"With organic stuff, it's a lot gentler, kinder."

According to New York news portal Nearsay.com, your skin absorbs approximately 60 percent of what you put on it.

"So, when you apply chemicals to your hair and scalp, some of those synthetic substances may enter your body although this is still up for debate," it says.

Organic products give you the peace of mind that what goes on your skin will not be harmful to your scalp and more so, your overall health.

STRENGTHEN COLORED HAIR

Here's a fact: your hair is more prone to damage when you dye it.

This is because the formula's alkaline ingredients remove your scalp's protective layers.

And when you go as far as bleaching your strands, the process strips off the melanin on your locks.

Using organic hair products is an effective remedy, according to New York-based parlor Salon pHactor.

Their website says, "The best organic hair care products can reverse the damage and strengthen the hair.

"For those who color, organic shampoo and natural hair care products can extend color life by closing the hair cuticle to lock in that color."

Natural hair products also nourish your hair when you take straightening treatments.

These shampoos and conditioners can top up your hair's moisture, repair the damage caused by chemicals, and prevent free radicals from destroying your hair follicles.
